Igniting the Spirit of Human Dignity

Dignity

Dignity is closely related to conscience and self-respect. Dignity means that I consciously choose to live according to universal spiritual and moral values. Without these values, our character does not have the necessary foundation to be able to withstand the storms of selfish individualism and greed or the burden of deprivation; we will soon be influenced by short-lived achievements or apparent shortcomings, which in turn create the preconditions for long-term insecurities, fear and aggression in our personality. Dignity is the ability to align my attitudes, words and actions with my authentic and genuine worth. It is the ability to express through my behaviour and way of life those characteristics which will enrich my relationships and increase the quality of my interactions, while at the same time, give me a sense of contentment and inner fulfilment. Dignity may find expression in physical circumstances and surroundings but will transcend them. A person demonstrates dignity if he does not sell his soul for ephemeral comforts and luxury, position and privilege, does not allow his soul to be crushed if he does not have these, and, if he does have them, does not base his worth on them.

A person with dignity does not compromise the values he or she believes in, recognising that to do so would mean to reduce the quality of life and to violate the personal rights of others. We all have the rights to inner peace, happy relationships and harmonious coexistence. However, these fundamental rights can only be protected when we have the courage to live by those moral values in which we deeply and firmly believe.

The world has a need for such people of honour - people who are ready to sacrifice personal advantage for the sake of collective gain, face up to problems rather than escaping from them, and strive to secure the standards that guarantee peace, respect and freedom for all people. Each member of a family is responsible for upholding its honour and now each of us must take responsibility for safeguarding the honour and dignity of our family - the family of all humanity.
