International Day of Peace:
September 21

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution designating September 21st of each year as the International Day of Peace (IDP). The intention of the resolution(A/RES/55/282) is to have the entire world observe a day of peace and nonviolence.

The Assembly declared that the Day be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence; an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day. The Assembly invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate the Day in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in establishing a global ceasefire.

The Brahma Kumaris are represented on the NGO Committee for the International Day of Peace, which has formed to coordinate preparations for the day and stimulate NGO activities around the world.

The Brahma Kumaris, through their network of centers in 103 countries, encourage people to observe the International Day of Peace, by dedicating time to reflect on the significance of the spiritual power of peace, and to promote activities that give diverse expressions to the value of peace. The reason underlying the observance is that when people around the world reflect on peace, they are focusing on the fundamental unity of the human spirit and the eternal realities of which we are all a part.
