The International Year of Peace
To Safeguard Peace and the Future of Humanity

1986

    Every year should be a year of peace. In designating 1986 as the International Year of Peace (IYP), however, the Member States of the Untied Nations have called the attention of the peoples around the world to the need to concentrate on the prospects and problems of attaining this universal goal. The international Year of Peace lays an international foundation for thought and action at every level in the promotion and maintenance of peace. This year is not a simple celebrating, but an opportunity for dedicated and continuing action.

    The theme of the year is: “To Safeguard Peace and the Future of Humanity”.

    The programme of the Year is o[en to everyone expressing support for the primary objectives of the Year. These objective are:

    • To stimulate concerted and effective action by the Untied Nations, it Member States, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, educational, co8ultural and academic institutions and the mass media in promoting peace;
    • To strengthen the Untied Nations as the principal international system devoted to the promotion and maintenance of peace;
    • To focus attention and encourage reflection on the basic requirements of peace in the contemporary world.
