Peace Messenger Award
*The Brahma Kumaris received 7 Peace Messenger Awards
for their significant contributions in the observance of the United Nations International Year of Peace.
The program for the International Year of Peace, adopted by General Assembly resolution 40/10, provides that
“a symbolic emblem entitled “Peace Messenger” will be awarded by the Secretary-General to organizations and
institutions making significant contributions to the observance of the Year.” The rules adopted by the
Secretary-General for the “Peace Messenger” award include:
- 1. The emblem is an expression of recognition by the Secretary-General for activities promoting peace
based on the objectives of the International Year of Peace. The emblem is presented as a certificate signed
by the Secretary-General.
- 2. The “Peace Messenger” certificate is awarded to organizations and institutions which provide continuing
opportunities for participation in the promotion of peace.
- 3. A special certificate may be awarded to cities.
- 4. The certificate is awarded on the basis of information received and evaluated by the United Nations
Secretariat from non-governmental organizations, governments, and United Nations Information Centres.
- 5. Certificates are presented on the International Day of Peace.
“Based on the positive experience of the United Nations in observing the International Year of Peace,
special recognition is now to be given to those organizations and institutions which made significant
and concrete contributions to the programme of the Year. … This Peace Messenger certificate is an
expression of appreciation for efforts made in the context of the Year. It is also presented in the
hope that the recipients will continue their cooperation with the United Nations in working toward the
realization of the long-term objectives set forth during the Year.
It is my pleasure to inform you that the Secretary-General has designated Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual
University as a “Peace Messenger”.
